Human Centered Voice Banking for People at Risk of Speech Loss
Project Overview
This project explores voice banking and voice cloning as assistive technologies for individuals with motor neuron disease or related conditions that may lead to progressive speech loss. The project focuses on preserving personal identity, emotional expression, and communication autonomy through ethical and accessible voice technology.
Research Aim
To investigate the technical, ethical, and user experience requirements for developing a voice banking workflow for people with progressive speech impairment.
Proposed Methodology
Students will review voice banking tools and clinical use cases, design a user journey for voice recording and future voice use, and evaluate available voice cloning approaches using sample consented recordings or publicly available datasets. The project should include an ethics-focused component addressing consent, privacy, misuse prevention, emotional sensitivity, and data ownership.
Expected Deliverables
A proposed voice banking workflow, ethical guidelines, a prototype interface or service blueprint, and an evaluation of voice quality and usability criteria.
