Double Majors, Minors, and Tracks

You can add a track, a minor or a second major to your degree to broaden your expertise across disciplines. This guide explains what each option is, who is eligible, and the steps to apply.

The options

What each pathway means

Primary major

The major you were admitted to when you enrolled. Completing it is what qualifies you to graduate.

Track

A structured set of courses within your own major that gives you a specific academic or professional emphasis.

Minor

A secondary field in another discipline: at least 15% of that program's hours, counting specialized courses only (not university requirements or electives).

Double major

Completing the requirements of two majors within one undergraduate program, using overlapping courses and a planned degree map.

Eligibility

Who can apply

The double majors, minors and tracks in this guide are mainly available to students of the College of Engineering and Advanced Computing. Students from other colleges may be considered if they have a strong mathematics and science background, meet the prerequisite requirements, and are approved by their home college.

Plan early. Courses must follow their prerequisite sequence, so the earlier you talk to your advisor, the less likely the pathway is to delay your graduation.

How to apply

Seven steps from interest to registration

  1. 1

Declare your interest in an additional pathway.

Usually toward the end of your first year
  2. 2

Meet your academic advisor to discuss your options, the requirements and a study plan.

  3. 3

Check the eligibility requirements above and confirm you meet all of them.

  4. 4

Choose your pathway: a track, a minor or a double major.

    After completing 60 credit hours
  5. 5

Submit the official request through the Apply for Double Majors, Minors, and Tracks eForm.

  6. 6

Get the required approvals from the academic departments involved.

  7. 7

Register for the approved pathway and start completing its requirements.

Pathways by program

Tracks, minors and double majors in the College

Tracks are taken by students of that major. Minors and double majors listed here are offered in that discipline to students of other programs. Ask your advisor which combinations fit your study plan.

General regulations

Rules that apply to every pathway

  • The track, minor or second major must be an approved specialization offered by Alfaisal University.
  • Adding a pathway is optional and is possible only after you are admitted to your primary major.
  • You must meet your academic advisor before enrolling in any additional pathway.
  • You may take courses for your primary major and your additional pathway in the same semester, within the University's rules on academic load and prerequisites.
  • To graduate you must complete all requirements of your primary major. Leaving an additional pathway does not affect your eligibility to graduate.
  • You may withdraw from a track, minor or double major with the approval of the departments involved, following University procedures.

Questions from students and parents

Frequently asked questions

Is a double major the same as earning two bachelor's degrees?

No. A double major lets you gain expertise in two disciplines within one degree program. Two bachelor's degrees means completing two full, separate programs.

Double majorTwo bachelor's degrees
One degreeTwo separate degrees
Shared curriculum and overlapping coursesEach degree has its own complete requirements
Fewer additional credit hoursSubstantially more credit hours
Shorter completion timeLonger completion time
One diploma showing both majors, subject to University policyTwo separate diplomas
Is a double major internationally recognized?

Yes. Double majors are common at leading universities in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and elsewhere. Recognition rests on the accreditation and standing of the university that awards the degree.

Why add a track, minor or second major?

It broadens what you can do with your degree:

  • Knowledge and skills across more than one discipline
  • More flexibility in choosing a career path
  • Stronger problem-solving and interdisciplinary thinking
  • Better preparation for emerging industries such as AI, data science and advanced manufacturing
Will employers value it?

Employers increasingly look for graduates who can work across disciplines. A second major or a minor shows curiosity, versatility and the ability to manage a demanding workload. Combinations in demand include AI + Business, AI + Engineering, Cybersecurity + Data Science, Software Engineering + AI, and Industrial Engineering + Data Analytics.

Your employability still depends on internships, projects, communication skills and the job market.

Should I do a double major or a master's degree?

They serve different purposes, and many students do both: a double major first, then a master's later.

Double majorPostgraduate degree
Broadens your expertise across two fieldsDeepens your specialization in one field
Completed during your undergraduate studiesTaken after your bachelor's degree
Builds multidisciplinary skillsBuilds advanced expertise and research skills
Can widen early-career optionsCan support leadership, research or specialist roles
Is an additional pathway right for me?

It may suit you if you:

  • Enjoy solving complex problems that span several fields
  • Have interests in more than one discipline
  • Want to work in emerging, fast-changing industries
  • Plan to pursue graduate or professional studies
  • Can keep a strong GPA while carrying a heavier workload
What happens if I change my mind?

You can withdraw from a track, minor or second major with your departments' approval. Withdrawing does not affect your graduation from your primary major.
