Smart grids and microgrids provide enabling technologies for the modern electric power grid to safely and efficiently include renewable and distributed energy resources (DER). They allow the overall grid to be resilient and specific entities, such as university campuses and industrial plants, to island themselves during times of distress on the grid.

To facilitate the study of smart grids, and enable the development of new methodologies for its operation and control, the SGL hosts an ongoing project entailing the development of a lab-scale DC Microgrid prototype. Also, research into DER modeling and control schemes for the overall Microgrid are also underway.

Eng. Habib M. Farooq received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Alfaisal University. He is currently a research assistant at Alfaisal University at the Joint Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles R&D Center (JSEC).

Eng. Habib is the Team Manager of Alfaisal Boeing Solar Car Team.
